For the first time ever, astronomers detected the birth of a magnetar through a strange chirping signal from supernova SN 2024afav, about a billion light-years away. The light oscillated and sped up โ just like gravitational waves from merging black holes โ caused by infalling material wobbling around the newborn neutron star at increasing speeds.
