The Inouye Solar Telescope just captured the sharpest images ever taken of the Sun's surface, revealing plasma vortices as narrow as 20 kilometers across β the same Kelvin-Helmholtz instability that curls breaking ocean waves and Jupiter's cloud bands. These tiny whirlpools form at the edges of magnetic structures in the photosphere and may help explain why the Sun's corona runs a million degrees hotter than its surface.
