๐Ÿงฌ Scientists Revive a Defeated Antibiotic by Disabling a Bacterial Armor Enzyme

Vancomycin was once medicine's last resort against deadly superbugs, but resistant bacteria had evolved a way around it. Researchers at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory found that a small molecule called pghi-4 blocks an enzyme (SagA) that VRE uses to fortify its cell wall โ€” restoring vancomycin's killing power and cutting the required dose by up to 8-fold in lab tests. The approach even worked across multiple clinical isolates and reduced bacterial burden in infected mice. Could this "adjuvant" strategy breathe new life into other antibiotics that superbugs have already defeated?
