๐ฌ Scientists Found the Protein Slowing Muscle Repair With Age โ and the Fix Has a Catch
UCLA researchers discovered that a protein called NDRG1 builds up 3.5 times higher in older muscle stem cells, acting as a cellular brake on the mTOR pathway that normally drives repair. When they blocked NDRG1 in aged mice, the stem cells behaved like young cells again, healing much faster after injury. But without NDRG1 protection, fewer stem cells survived repeated injuries over time, suggesting slower repair may be a survival trade-off built into aging. If you could speed up your muscle recovery at the cost of fewer stem cells down the road, would you take the deal?
