๐ง Scientists named a brand-new way Alzheimer's kills brain cells โ and it was hiding in plain sight
Researchers at King's College London discovered a distinct cell-death process called karyoptosis that may be a missing link in how Alzheimer's destroys neurons. Studying nearly 3,000 brain cells from 28 patients, they found karyoptosis in over one-third of frontal cortex cells from Alzheimer's brains, versus just 15% in healthy older brains. It begins when toxic proteins trigger the cell's nucleus to slowly shrink and disintegrate. Could blocking this pathway open up a whole new approach to slowing dementia?
