Saving this. I've read a dozen takes on this and yours is the first that admits the tradeoff instead of pretending there isn't one. What would you give up first if you had to cut back?
This, and the part that gets missed is it only works if you actually track it. Eyeballing it never once worked for me.

Strong agree, though I'd add it depends a lot on where you're starting. A total beginner might need one step before this even applies.
